"McCallum
kicks field goal with eight
seconds left as Lions beat Als
36-34"
VANCOUVER - Paul McCallum was
money for the B.C. Lions with
five field goals but Ian Smart
provided the momentum change
against the Montreal Alouettes
with an electrifying kickoff
return.
McCallum booted the decisive
points from 28 yards with only
eight seconds remaining in Friday’s
wild 36-34 win. But the speedy
Smart narrowed an 11-point Alouette
lead to four with his 91-yard
effort in the third quarter
- the |
first time the Lions had returned
a kickoff for a touchdown in four
seasons.
“That was definitely a big play,”
said Smart, who outran the coverage
after Montreal kicker Damon Duval
fell in a tackle attempt. “They
had scored and we definitely needed
an answer.”
“I saw how (kick returns were)
developing through the course of the
game. We broke a few and we knew we
had a chance … and in the second
half we just came back and attacked
them.”
“It definitely gave us a momentum
swing and we took that and rode it
to the end of the game.”
B.C. quarterback Jarious Jackson,
who was intercepted and sacked earlier
in the fourth quarter when the Lions
were within McCallum’s range,
said special teams were the key factor.
“Ian had a crucial return at
a crucial moment and that gave us
momentum for the game,” said
Jackson who found the range in the
second half to complete 22 of 41 attempts
for 319 yards and a 43-yard touchdown
to Paris Jackson.
“He’s such a humble guy.
He comes out every day and works hard
and he doesn’t get a whole lot
of reps on offence but he makes his
money on special teams.”
McCallum said a group effort made
his winning kick possible.
“We’re a very well composed
team,” McCallum said. “We
never give up and play 60 minutes.
The three years I’ve been here
that’s been the attitude. No
matter what the score, the game’s
not over.”
The Lions improved to 3-2 with their
eighth consecutive victory over Montreal
at B.C. Place Stadium while the Alouettes
slipped to 2-3 with their third consecutive
loss.
Joe Smith, who gained 97 yards on
18 carries in his return from missing
two games with a shoulder injury,
plunged over from one yard for the
other B.C. touchdown.
Anthony Calvillo threw three touchdown
passes - two to Brian Bratton who
got the first majors of his CFL career.
Kerry Watkins gave the Alouettes a
7-3 lead with an eight-yard reception
as both clubs scored on their opening
possessions.
Backup quarterback Adrian McPherson
got the other Montreal touchdown on
a one-yard run while Duval booted
two field goals, three converts and
a 91-yard single.
All-purpose back Avon Colbourne led
all rushers with 127 yards on 14 carries
for the Alouettes.
It was a disappointing night for Calvillo
who was intercepted twice by his friend
and former Alouette Barron Miles.
“We fought hard,” said
Calvillo, who connected on 20 of 36
throws for 276 yards. “We just
didn’t play four quarters. That’s
what’s been going on the last
three weeks offensively.
“We’ve got to finish drives
in that fourth quarter and that was
the difference tonight.”
Calvillo said before the game that
Miles was “shooting goose-eggs”
when it came to intercepting him but
Miles ended a late Alouette drive
with his second pick.
“It’s just frustrating
right now, because we taught ourselves
this is what we’re going to
be made of … and I go out there
and throw an interception that kills
us,” Calvillo said.
Miles, who spent seven seasons with
Montreal, said his interceptions were
a catalyst to the victory.
“I talk about it every year
I go by without getting one (against
Calvillo),” Miles said. “I
tell him I’m coming, I’m
coming and this was the right time
and place.”
